The dodo is the most known, or recognized, extinct species, yet most everything about the bird is debatable. The years it went extinct, its appearance, colorations, lazy bird or athletic, the list goes on. The last known taxidermied specimen burned up in a fire in the late 1700s. The only thing agreed upon fully is the introduction of humans, and other invasive animals to the island of Mauritius caused the rapid decline of many species of birds that inhabited the island.   While having an existential crisis focused on my life’s direction, my purpose, why I was in the position I found myself. My only certainty was that humans are going to destroy everything, and no one will agree on how that will take place.
I used this piece as a focal point. Instead of focusing on how terrible the human race is, or how damaging, or how I could easily die behind the wheel of this vehicle I drive for work in the oil fields of North Dakota. Rather I focused on how to paint the imagery, it gave me something to look forward too.
A collaboration with my middle child Eli.
